Trainees - Cohort 3

Joseph Raymond

  • PhD Student, Agriculture and Resource Economics
Joseph received his MSc in Food, Agriculture, and Resource Economics from the University of Guelph in 2019. His research interests include data sciences, environmental economics, as well as the design of effective natural resource policies. One of Joseph’s specific interests is analyzing the impact of seaweed cultivation on other forms of aquaculture.

Darian Sorenson

  • PhD Student, Graduate Group in Applied Math
Darian received her B.A. in mathematics from Utah State University in 2020. Her interests lie in using mathematical analysis, modeling, and computational tools to help conserve marine species. She is especially interested in using these tools to understand how climate change will affect marine ecosystems.

Trainees - Cohort 4

Laurie Balstad

  • PhD Student, Population Biology
Laurie received her B.A. in Mathematics and Biology from St. Olaf College in 2021. She is particularly interested in using mathematical models to address conservation and management efforts important to communities across the Northern Pacific.

Mei Blundell

  • PhD Student, Population Biology
Mei earned a bachelor’s degree in Computational and Systems Biology, with a minor in Biomedical Research, from UCLA in 2021. As a PhD student in Population Biology at UC Davis, she seeks to apply quantitative and theoretical modeling to the conservation of populations that are ecologically, economically, or culturally significant, particularly in marine systems.

Catherine Courtier

  • PhD Student Graduate Group in Ecology
Catherine earned her B.S from the University of California, Santa Cruz in Marine Biology and her M.A.S in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Her interests lie broadly in resource economics; specifically how land management practices like restoration and conservation affect biodiversity and ecosystem health, how to quantify the ecosystem services of these managed habitats, and how these services change over time in the face of global environmental change.

Connor Magee

  • PhD Student Graduate Group in Ecology
Connor received his B.S. in Sustainability Studies, minoring in Geology from University of California Riverside in 2019. Connor has been serving as Data and Research Applications Manager at the Climate Science Alliance, working with Southern California Tribal communities to build resilience and to develop adaptation strategies for the changing regional environment. Connor is interested in learning how to foster community resilience in Southern California coastal systems.

Sophia Simon

  • PhD Student Graduate Group in Ecology
Sophia received her B.S. in Microbiology, with a minor in Math, from the University of Michigan. Since then, she has worked in epidemiology and ecology labs studying disease transmission dynamics and consumer-resource interactions. She aims to use mathematical models to investigate questions of marine sustainability with a focus on studying the Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory intertidal food web.

Trainees - Cohort 5

Lizzy Ashley

  • DVM/PhD Student, School of Veterinary Medicine & Graduate Group in Epidemiology
Lizzy received B.S. degrees in Ecology and Biology from the University of Georgia in 2019. She is interested in the pathology and epidemiology of infectious diseases and biotoxins in marine wildlife. She aims to study the role of land and water use in coastal pathogen pollution, quantify disease risks to threatened species and resource-dependent communities, and evaluate ocean policy solutions through a One Health lens.

Shreya Banerjee

  • PhD Student, Graduate Group in Population Biology
Shreya earned her Bachelor's in Environmental Systems in 2016 and her Master's in Marine Biology in 2017 from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, where she worked on sea turtle mating systems. Between her master's and beginning her PhD, She worked as a lab manager in a conservation genomics lab at UMass Amherst and later an evolutionary biology lab at Stanford University. She has also spent time working as a field biology technician. She is looking forward to using her molecular ecology background to understand how environmental stressors do and will affect adaptation in marine invertebrates.

Sam Beckert

  • PhD Student, Graduate Group in Animal Biology
Sam received her bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution, with a minor in Global Health, from UCLA in 2019. She is interested in examining the impacts of commercial fishing and aquaculture practices on species development and reproduction. She aims to utilize physiological research to address issues in resource management, conservation, and the development of sustainable aquatic food sources.
